GBACC NEWS:
The first day for Railroad Days was a disaster for the GBACC/EDC cooperative effort booth. David Swope and Jerry Knight set up tables with brochures at 9:00am, and then the rain began to fall! Pat Baker and Katherine Iacovelli arrived to help so, we tried one more time but finally gave up. Sunday the day was as beautiful as Saturday’s was dismal and a there was a very large, enthusiastic crowd. David Swope and Katherine Iacovelli worked the brochure with Doug O’Rear and Mary McCormack handing out balloons at an adjacent table. Pat Baker and Lloyd McIntire joined us at 2:00pm.
Wednesday October 18th theBusiness Card Exchange was held at Sundance Art and Frame. Diane Ellis had an elegant selection of hor ‘dourves, wine and soft drinks. Diane has made her shop a beautiful addition to the downtown business district. If you are looking for that special gift, this is a great place to find it. Several members were overheard saying they would be back to do some holiday shopping. Eleven GBACC Members were in attendance. Enjoy great organic vegetables from Shawna and Atilla at the vegetable market next to Beans in the Belfry on Sunday from 11:00am-3:00 pm.
We went to see “Craggy Island” at Beans in the Belfry on a Saturday night in October. They perform Irish music. While looking around at the people gathered for the performance I noticed several family groups. Parents had their teenage children and some younger children with them. It struck me that this is a fantastic way to spend time with your children and introduce them to new and different music. Beans in the Belfry encourages families to attend the performances. Many people complain that Brunswick does not offer significant family entertainment and here is a great one at Beans.
Beth Johnson reports: I just wanted to share my recent visit to the Brunswick Railroad Museum with you. On the 2nd floor Social History Gallery, they have a special exhibit ongoing through November 12th. It is called “A Day Will Come…Death in the Late Victorian Era”…and it is wonderful!
It sounds a bit maudlin, but is done with great taste and decorum…and gives facts behind many “superstitions” that we have heard about all of our lives.
The docents are all in mourning and each room in the Victorian house depict some aspect of the death of a young child, and the rituals that were prevalent in that time frame. Much fascinating information about rituals and traditions are represented in photographs, artifacts and written documentation and there are factual excerpts from the city’s death register. Although the “child’s death” is fictitious, the Memento Mori and death notices from the area papers are all true, local history.
Editor’s note: If you have any news about what is good around the area drop me a line and let me know and I will add it in this space.
